  • Just a dribble for me, thank you...

drab·ble - an extremely short work of fiction exactly one hundred words in length.

I have had the pleasure of reading many drabbles over the past couple of months and even envy those who can produce many of them regularly and with ease. Since I seem to lack the stamina required for the frequent writing of such works, I have buried the vain hope of becoming a drabbler and moved on.
Instead, I give you the dribble.

    drib·ble
    v.intr.
    1. To flow or fall in drops or an unsteady stream; trickle.
    2. To let saliva drip from the mouth; drool.
    3. Sports
        a. To dribble a ball or puck.
    n.
    1. A weak, unsteady stream; a trickle.
    2. A small quantity; a bit.

    OR

drib·ble - an extremely short work of nonsense, often without a plot or purpose and brought on either by intrigue or boredom.

Dribbling... yes, I think that's something I can do.

"Excuse me sir! Is this the Providence train?"- Part 1

At 6:17 each morning, a crowed begins to form at the train station. At 6:22 it drastically increases in size. Finally, at 6:28 the train arrives, clanging and hissing with air rushing all around, and all the soon-to-be passengers try to arrange the large mass that they are into a shape and size that will somehow fit through the door to the car before them. Thus they enter the Gateway to Commuterdom and begin the ride to their final destination.

As a frequent user of the Commuter Rail, I have begun to notice many things about my fellow passengers:
    1) Commuters are habitual creatures. We stand in the same spot, on the same platform, in between the same people (who happen to be drinking the same coffee), every day. We like it that way. We don't necessarily like that spot, or those people more than, say, that other spot, or those other people. We simply like knowing we're supposed to stand there next to them.

    2) Everyone carries something. Some passengers carry newspapers or magazines. Others carry laptops and work-related materials. Some tote backpacks and coffee, and others, briefcases and granola bars. Interestingly enough, some people bring these things to use, while others simply cling to them as they nap.

    3) The time of the train decides the type of commuter. The 3:50 Outbound, for example, is generally a relaxed ride with semi-well-natured people. There may be a small sence of urgency among the passengers, but only in an "I need to pick up my child from soccer and take them home to eat their dinner which has hopefully finished thawing by now" sort of way. With the 5:05, exiting the parking lot is a nightmere. Everyone seems to have something important to do, but they're often more apt to make conversation. The 6:15, on the other hand, is surprising. It is not as full as the earlier trains, and lends to a kind of sleepy atmosphere. Unlike the others, it is always five to ten minutes late. It's passengers walk slowly and methodically, yet still in good humor... I guess.

As you can see so far, the life of a Commuter is loaded with adventure and intrigue!

  • I'm tired, I'm hungry... but could that be Brahms?

    Stuck in the mountains
    with no place to go
How dull is this ski town
    when void of all snow
Quite scarce are the malls and
    there's no place to sup
With no need for snow boots
    the shops are closed up
    Oh clearly there's nothing
    exciting 'round here
    But wait just a minute!
    Is that Bach I hear?

    Sweet music of Killington

    Resonate high!
    As bright as the sunshine
    and filling the sky
    What mem'ries you carry
    of summers passed by
    Of creamy cheese pasta
    and rich apple pie
    Of big squishy couches
    and doors that slam hard
    Of bugs that bite harder
    and evenings of cards
    Sweet music of Killington!
    Immortal song!
    Remain in our mem'ries
    When summer has gone!

    Stuck in the mountains

    with no place to roam
It's by choice I find myself
    so far from home
But why would I choose this?
    I'm missing my mom
    I'm tired! I'm hungry!
    But ...could that be Brahms?

    Sweet music of Killington
    resonate high!
    As clear as the mountain
    streams bubbling by
    What mem'ries, what mem'ries
    of sheet music stacks
    Of sight-reading parties
    and ten o'clock snacks
    Of Ultimate Frisbee
    and Ping-Pong galore
    Of soccer and swimming
    and trips to the store

    Of loaning out laptops
    and pencils and stands
    Starbursts and bubble gum
    Shoes full of sand
    Of concerts and classes
    and Faculty Talks
    Forgetting your key with
    your bedroom door locked
    Of pizza on Mondays
    and late Sunday brunch
    And groaning at breakfast
    and laughing at lunch
    Last minute rehearsals
    for last minute gigs
    Of running down mountains
    through grasses and twigs
    Sweet music of Killington
    resonate high!
    What mem'ries, what mem'ries
    of Summers passed by!

  • Somewhere over that arching stream of refracted light, there's no place like home: Na'08 part two

The Na String Ensemble dressed in our Morning Whites.

C.J. Mahaney - The Troubled Soul: God's Word and Our Feelings - Psalm 42
"As a deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for You, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God? My tears have been my food day and night, while they say to me continually, 'Where is your God?' ...Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise Him, my salvation and my God."

-I am the most influential person in my life, because no one talks to me more than I do. How faith-driven and Christ-centered is the conversation that I have with me every day?
(Good Read: Instruments in the Redeemer's Hand by Paul Tripp)

-Troubled souls cannot be trusted and our circumstances often lie to us.

-God hasn't forgotten the Psalmist, the Psalmist has forgotten God. So he reminds himself.
"Hope in God; for I shall again praise Him..."

-Search for scriptures that carry promises for my situation, and then bring them to God. God intended His promises to be used. He delights in keeping them.

Luke, Nikki, and Shelly dressed in their Evening Pinks.
The guys thought it was funny until a little girl saw them in the elevator and shouted, "Look! They match!"

Eric Simmons - What's the Point?: Growing in Vision for Diligent Study

-The Scriptures reveal Jesus Christ. The Bible teaches me about Christ and salvation, and gives me inexhaustible ways to see and know Him. Does that excite me?

-The Scriptures give life. They are God-breathed. And when God breaths life happens.

-The Scriptures equip us for God's mission. I have a part to play. The call is sobering, humbling, and demands equipping.

-"Don't settle for a life that's not blowing up. Diligently search the Scriptures."

John Piper - Fighting for Faith with God's Word

    - "The fight is a mortal fight to the death... If you stop swimming you go backward, you don't stay at your level of sanctification."

    - The fight for faith is a fight for joy, for treasuring and being satisfied in Christ.
    1) Joy = Faith (2 Cor. 1:24)
    2) Receiving = Believing that Jesus is my Savior from Hell and that He saved me to love, know, and embrace Him (John 1:12)
    3) Believing = Coming to Christ so as to satisfy soul-thirst (John 6:35)
    4) Conversion = Stumbling on the treasure wich is King Christ and finding Him so valuable that everything else can be sold and you have everything you need (Matthew 13:44)
    5) Believing = Enjoying Christ

    - I cannot make progress until I believe that God is not 99% for me, but 100%. Whatever happens, He is not against me.

    - Have a time, place, and plan for my reading of the Word. If I can't focus, write it out.
"There are more eyes on a pencil than you know."

Crossway shuttling back to the airport.
(Erin's knee, Joel's back, Shelly, Shelly's apple, Luke, Dave's arm... just to clarify)

Here we are staying hydrated and well versed in Bach while waiting for our delayed flight.
By the end of the weekend I had almost enough change for a coffee from Dunkin Donuts.

And here we are again, proving that waiting on a runway for three hours can be fun and relaxing even when you have to work twelve hours or play in a viola recital the next day.

  • There and back again, and everything in between: Na'08 part one

The first day of conferencing we took advantage of our fairly early arrival by getting a table for 13 at the Old Spaghetti Factory.

Joy consumed us as we found out that each of our meals came with a complimentary dish of Spumoni ice cream. Little did we know, it would be one of our only chances to eat for the rest of the conference.

    Speaking of eating...

    Josh Harris - Jeremiah 15:16

"Your words were found and I ate them, and Your words became to me a joy and the delight of my heart, for I am called by Your name, O LORD God of hosts."

-I eat things that I trust, and it becomes part of me, and sustains me. There is anticipation and joy and excitement in eating that food.

    -What do I delight in?

-"God's word meets us right where we are... in the midst of doubt... questions...
God's word speaks perfectly even when you aren't doing perfectly, and God's word has power even when you feel weak and powerless..."

-Delight in God's word is often something we have to fight for...

-"We don't love God's word so that we can earn our standing before Him. We love God's word because this God has established our standing before Him in the death of His son..."

It's amazingly difficult to get 12 people to look in the same direction at the same time... especially when they're us.

Mark Dever - The reliability of the Bible

-All scripture is breathed by God. Why do I doubt the reliability of the Bible?

    -"Just because I don't know everything doesn't mean I don't know anything."

-Bible study is one of the best ways to increase my faith.

-God is active in His word. Far more is going on than I realize. He's acting even when I don't know it, and is storing up His word for later.

Again with the joy. This time: pizza!!

    Al Mohler - Bible Q&A

-The law is meant to show us our need for a Savior.

-"Their will be people in heaven who never knew the doctrines of grace, but knew grace."

-What is good = what is true = what is beautiful = what is good = what is true = what is beautiful...

Quotes

"Be appalled, O heavens, at this; be shocked, be utterly dismayed... for my people have committed two great evils: they have forsaken me, the fountain of living water, and have hewed out for themselves cisterns, broken cisterns that can hold no water. Go to the Fountain! Go to the Fountain! The opposite of coming to the Fountain is evil, the essence of coming to the Fountain is drinking, and drinking, and drinking until it satisfies your soul, and you say, "Ah!"..." ~John Piper on Jeremiah 2:12-13
